Wind Quintet in three movements:
I. Chairs with Holes
II. Sponge
III. Fence
While being unnamed during the writing process, the title Porous Objects became apparent as the piece came to be. After finishing the first movement, it felt indicative of the chairs I have sat on many times outside at the Frost School of Music. The second movement acts like a sponge, undulating in and out throughout. The final movement was written around the title “Fence” specifically, capturing the image of building one. The overall title is also a fitting descriptor for the instruments of the wind quintet, perhaps with exception to the horn. While each movement is loosely connected through the shared porousness of the title objects, they all share a little bit of material as well, some being rigid themes and others using certain rows of notes taken from a previous movement.
